Bible Verses for Overeating Disorder

Eating DisordersIndividual CounselingSpiritual DevelopmentWomen's Issues

Is overeating a struggle for you? Many of us face this struggle daily in our abundant culture, where food is tempting and readily available. However, the Bible can help you have better health by reminding you to curb your overeating habits.

When you use specific verses of God’s Word to prepare yourself, you can fight back with confidence when you are tempted to overeat. Jesus used Scripture to fight temptation at a time when he was very hungry (Matt. 4:1-11). If he did this to overcome Satan, we can do the same thing to gain spiritual victory.

The following verses are powerful weapons for you to fight temptation. Meditate on them, memorize them, write them down, post them where you see them often, and save them to your phone. The more ways you hide God’s Word in your heart, the more easily you will remember it when you are tempted to overeat. You can ask the Holy Spirit to bring them to mind when you need accountability in your eating habits.

The Best Bible Verses for Overeating Disorder

You can turn each of the following verses into a prayer in times of temptation. God will meet you right in those moments and give you the strength to overcome. He promises to deliver you from whatever temptation you face, and he will empower you to make better choices for your health.

…the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. – Psalm 19:9b-10

God considers his laws to be more desirable than the sweetest food available during Bible times – honey. His laws are more desirable than the finest gold, or perhaps your food craving of choice: chips, French fries, doughnuts, ice cream, pizza, or whatever tempts you most.

Remember that when you follow God’s laws, you will be blessed with a clean conscience. You won’t be riddled with guilt and shame like you may be when you overeat. God will help you make wise eating choices so you can live a disciplined life for his Kingdom work. His laws lead to life, while our poor choices lead to destruction, so remember this verse when you are tempted.

So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips. – Psalm 63:4-5

What are the richest foods you have tasted? Steak, lobster, cheesecake, or something else? Are you honestly as satisfied with God as you are when you eat these rich foods? You can learn to be more satisfied with God’s presence than you are with food, though this will take discipline.

The peace you find in God’s presence lasts much longer than the pleasure you get from eating rich food. When you learn to gain your true satisfaction from God, your faith will be grounded even while food looks tempting to you.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4

What are the desires of your heart when you are tempted to overeat? It’s probably not to simply feel full or enjoy the taste and texture of food. Most of us overeat to soothe our emotions and fill a place inside that feels empty. Often people with overeating disorders deal with loneliness, rejection, anxiety, depression, and other problems.

A caring Christian counselor can help you get to the roots of why you overeat. You can learn that taking delight in the Lord is much more satisfying than overeating, and you can trust him with the deepest desires of your heart.

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! – Psalm 119:103

Bible Verses for Overeating DisorderGod’s Word will become sweeter to you the more you meditate on it, study it, and apply it to your life. The Bible has healing properties, just like real honey does. But God’s Word heals you with God’s love, comfort, encouragement, protection, and joy as you learn to relax in his presence and enjoy time with him. Each day, meet with God for a few minutes, asking him to make his words sweeter than honey to you and healing for your soul.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity, and let me not eat of their delicacies! – Psalm 141:3-4

These verses address the issue of controlling what we say. But they can also apply to what food passes over our lips. We can ask God to stand guard over our lips when we are faced with a tempting situation.

He will help you stop putting things into your mouth that aren’t good for you. You can ask God to keep you from drifting toward evil choices and help you avoid the wrong kinds of delicacies. The next time you are tempted, simply pray “Guard my lips,” and God will be right beside you.

I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” – Psalm 142:5

When you feel like you want that third piece of cake or fourth slice of pizza, you can pray this verse. You can say, “Lord, I think I want this food right now. But I know my true craving should be for you because you alone can satisfy me.” Then walk away from the temptation, drink a glass of water, and engage in a different activity. God will be your refuge in that moment, a haven where you can find comfort that lasts longer than the food you are craving.

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it. – Proverbs 25:16

The Bible is eminently practical. Any food, even healthy food like honey, can make you sick if you overeat. Choose to eat a balanced diet of nourishing foods to protect your health and feel your best. When you are tempted to overeat in certain food categories, remember this verse and don’t succumb to temptation.

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” – Matthew 26:41

Our minds and spirits may be willing to make wise food choices, but the sinful nature of our flesh is vulnerable to temptation. All of us face this scenario at one time or another, particularly when we are stressed. But God will help you in the very moment of temptation if you cry out to him. Admit to him that your flesh is weak, and ask him to deliver you from the temptation to overeat.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13

This verse can be a practical comfort to you in times of temptation. Ask God to provide you a way out when you are about to overeat. He might instruct you to remove tempting foods from your pantry or eat a mini-meal before going to a restaurant. You can form more practical strategies to serve as escape routes with a qualified Christian counselor.
