Laura Meyer, MS, LMHCA

Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate
(425) 939-7959 lauram@seattlechristiancounseling.com

Our humanness can drive us to unexpected places, and as dark and painful as this may be, those same places offer us a chance to find our courage, strength, beauty, and grace. With the humbleness and unconditional love of Christ, I will encourage you to pursue freedom from unwanted thoughts, habits, circumstances, and conditions. I will challenge you to embrace a life of courage with God’s help as you seek to make positive changes in your life that will have lasting implications for good.

About

I offer faith-based therapy and coaching to individuals, couples, and groups facing a range of challenges including anxiety, depression, addiction (substance and non-substance), relationship issues, and more. Sometimes we don’t even realize the factors in our lives that are hindering us from growth. Through our sessions, my hope is that together we will identify the roadblocks that have been keeping you from moving forward, discover the tools needed to overcome those obstacles, and gain the courage and strength from the Lord to implement the necessary changes in your life.

My Goal as a Christian Counselor

My hope is for you to free yourself from destructive patterns (internally and externally) and gain freedom to live in the world with an unconditional love that heals, a forgiveness that liberates, and a courage that empowers, and to learn to use these accessible gifts as a means to grow, heal, and to help free others.

What I Offer in Christian Counseling

Counseling sessions provide a space to reveal what needs attention in your life. This revelation will prompt a response, which we will clarify in our sessions, and this response will prompt an internal or external action or shift, which is where the real work is done. We will also look at any resistance to change. After our first few sessions, I will offer a suggested progression plan to best meet your therapeutic needs.

My Approach to Christian Counseling

The Christ-centered approach offers a kind of healing that is beyond words. I’ve always believed the teachings and gifts of Christ are meant to heal – to offer freedom – and are meant to be powerful. I have witnessed “beautifully messy” lives changed in the most profound way that it brings the word miraculous to life.

Biography

Qualifications & Experience

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHCA) with a Master’s Degree in Counseling and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia. I have over 16 years of experience working in the mental health field including 12 years of addiction recovery experience.

Prior to counseling, I served as an adjunct professor for psychology and human development. I also ran wellness programs in north Florida and south Georgia organizations, universities, and integrative health centers.

My Call to Christian Counseling

The career in counseling pursued me. I listened and followed the pursuit.

More About Me/On a Personal Note

My interests are connected to God-given priceless matters such as courage, creativity, felt-beauty, felt-strength, forgiveness, nature, silence, stillness, communion, talents from others, our ability to renew the mind, heartfelt matters, and an appreciation for the human form we live in. I spend most of my time engaged in learning to receive, and in teaching others to receive these priceless gifts.

Anxiety

In our sessions together, we’ll look at how anxiety patterns are experienced – in thought content, images, emotions, sensations, and any memories. The work to free yourself from anxiety is usually brought forth by a sense of safety and security in a way that is individual and unique to you.

Depression

Relieving depression is usually the work of lifting ourselves up and out of shame, guilt (punishment), apathy (feels heavy and burdensome), a sense of failure, or fear. We can become victims (slaves) to these paralyzing emotions that depress and oppress higher order and God-given skills we might otherwise have available to us.

Chemical Dependency (Drug and Alcohol Dependency)

Drug and alcohol concerns have to do with desire; our misplaced and unskillful use of desire. Desire is part of being human and a source of motivation. Learning to be more skillful with our desires and understanding what we really crave can be life-giving (as opposed to destructive).

Spiritual Development

My work with spiritual development starts with developing discernment by way of, “The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” I help clients access the courage they need to change, and we begin to use what’s in our hands, that which God has made available to us in the present moment.

Women’s Issues

As women, our unmet needs and unhealed wounds can surface as physical, mental, and emotional pain. As we learn to give attention to our feminine heart, we begin to see our unique essence (which is what most of us long for). I help women become comfortable in their own skin, and to know their unique place in the world as women.
